After starting my festive baking business last December I was thrilled to become award winning mince pies and Christmas pudding winner this year.
Having submitted both products in February, I then had a long wait to find out that I had received a *ONE STAR* award from The Guild of Fine Food this summer.
I was thrilled to be given the stars and am now inspired to keep baking and improving my festive products as well as my range of cakes.
Here is what the judges had to say…
Mince Pies
“We liked the thin crispy pastry crust that was well baked and beautifully buttery. The rich fruity aroma was enticing and the filling was generous and had a good variety of crunchy nuts, candied peel and juicy apple and currants for textural contrast. This product has exceptional potential, we were only missing the promised depths of Scotch whisky along with ginger to add further complexity and taste sensation. It’s almost there”
“Wonderful short buttery pastry. Homemade appearance, Delicious filling”
“Nicely formed, artisan looking little pies with delightfully short textured, golden pastry. The aroma is most enticing, redolent of whisky soaked fruit and spice. We were surprised by the restrained sweetness of the filling, but did enjoy its tastes and textures, not least the gentle spice and delicate touches of ginger and Bramley apple. Different and delightful”
Christmas Pudding
“This is a lovely looking pudding that is easy to cut, has a soft consistency and lots of plump dried fruit present. We love the aromas of fruit and Sherry. The flavour is delicious and the individual tastes of the fruit and gentle alcohol come out. There is a zestiness to the flavour profile whish is balanced with sticky sweetness and this is really pleasing. The textures in the mouth are lovely. The plump fruit is complemented by the nuts and the soft breadcrumbs”
“A lighter style Christmas pud which is wonderfully moist. Interested to know why breadcrumbs are being shouted about as opposed to the origins of the fruits. We like this! Light, zesty, nutty and full of flavour without being at all stodgy. Perfect for our tastes. Slightly smaller size also appeals”
“A delightfully aromatic if relatively pale and un-glossy pudding. The aromatic promise of the booze is certainly fulfilled on the palate – a great meld of the sherry and the ale. We loved the plumpness of the fruit, the lightness of the crumb, the overall moistness, its easy-to-eat, un-cloying taste and texture. Really well achieved, a truly great tasting if relatively simple festive pudding”
