I love chocolate and I love tofu. Would you have thought about trying the two together?
This tofu choco breakfast shake is the result of my latest purchase. Silken Tofu.
I rarely find a food that I do not like. But don’t cook me parsnips. Eurggghhh. Groooossssss.
What I have realised over time is that I am not keen on certain textures. Textures are what I dislike about certain foods far more than their taste.
The texture I find particularly challenging is soft and blubbery. I love crunch, crisp and bite in my food. Exactly what silken tofu is not. I made the mistake of adding some to my latest miso soup which seemed to emphasise it’s jellyfish-like slipperiness. It just flopped into the soup and tasted mildly cheesy and proved my point that sloppy textures are hard for me to digest.
But I will not be defeated by it. I am on the look out for a very tasty silken tofu recipe. If you have one up your sleeve please send it my way.
In the meantime, not wishing to waste the remaining tofu, I decided to whip it up into this absolutely knockout breakfast shake using my Froothie. This chocolate shake won’t pile on the calories either as it contains raw cacao powder, honey, raisins, bircher muesli, frozen banana and milk as well as silken tofu.
This is a shake that will curb any chocolate cravings and you can believe me as I am a serial chocolate muncher. Why not give it a try and tell me what you think?

Recipe Notes
This is a flexible recipe. You can tailor the proportions of the ingredients to suit your taste.
I’m not particularly keen on jellyfish like food either. Risotto? Can’t understand the appeal of soggy rice at all, and tofu is definitely on my ‘would rather not eat’ list. However, your breakfast shake sounds rather lovely! 🙂
Yes, this could be the way forward Elizabeth. I use to not like risotto either but don’t mind it now, although the texture is not one of my favourites, I do love the flavour of a well made risotto.
Hah – I think we may be related! I’m also 100% a texture person – almost all my (short list!) of food dislikes are because of a slimy/squishy texture. Ripe bananas, mealy pears, sago pudding, sea urchin… shudder!! Clever idea to whip the wobbly tofu into a shake – and everything is better with a chocolate flavour! 🙂
We share the same texture related dislikes then Jeanne, you reminded me I also loathe tapioca!
I actually love that slippery texture of silken tofu but I understand why some wouldn’t. I’ve used it in a savoury dressing for green beans, but not yet tried it in a sweet drink or dessert.
Oh yes I could see it working in a dressing Kavey, just have to get to grips with eating it in it’s usual form
What a great idea and so healthy. I sometimes make chocolate mousse for Cooper with Silken tofu. In fact I think I’ll make i today! Will keep some aside to try this too.
Oh I like that idea Jac, using it in a mousse would definitely work for us all here too!
Another texture person here. But, as a cancer health educator, it is part of the job description to not only like tofu, but promote eating it too! The textures I can’t do are tapioca, semolina, jelly, oysters, trifle. But tofu, it is so versatile and easy to disguise that it is a matter of finding the right recipe. And the right tofu product. Silken is sometimes a hard sell but you have done a brilliant job with it here. I have made a death by chocolate type pie with silken tofu, soon to be blogged. Probs not as healthy as this! Excellent Froothie recipe 🙂
Tofu and chocolate? I am intrigued! certainly looks tasty- I can not wait to try it x
Oh thanks Deena, it tastes like it is really unhealthy but it isn’t!
