Random Recipes – It’s all about the Cook Books

Sometimes after a really busy month (I think I now look at my life in terms of blog months) I wonder how I can manage my time better. There is still so much I want to do each month and I never achieve everything I want to achieve. Then I remember why it’s all so manic……..3 young children!

I would like to think/hope there are a few of you out there who feel the same way. Life is full on and I can’t remember the last time I actually sat and vegged in front of the TV. Yes, I can. It happened all the time pre-blog!

So, every now and then I breathe a welcome sigh of relief. Which is exactly what I did when I read Dom at Belleau Kitchen’s latest RANDOM RECIPE CHALLENGE. An inspired idea and one that does not involve cooking but snapping our varying collections of cook books. I can do this and it won’t take me a whole evening!

I love blogging, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that the last week of the month comes around and I suddenly realise there are lots of recipes I have simply run out of time to make. With this “something a little different” theme, I can write and snap and post within an hour. So, maybe now I will just go off and rustle up an amazing meal and not photograph it…….just eat and enjoy!

Thanks Dom, as a challenge, I can’t think of anything I would rather do than to rifle through other blogger’s cook books. My collection has been building ever since my first teen  purchase of May Berry’s “Ultimate Cake Book “. But, I have a particular love of retro cookbooks at the moment. Food styling in past decades fascinates me.

I have made a gallery of photos, due to my cook books being in 4 parts of my kitchen. Plus, I had to add in my latest purchase. Today, I found 4 books (all good,2 retro) for a fiver. I should not be allowed into charity shops. If I had my way, I could easily buy 4 a day!

  1. I was relieved this month too. I always have so much to do these days.

  2. Well thanks ladies. I think it’s been a bit challenge-manic on the bloggasphere recently and I was suffering myself too. It was always supposed to be fun right? So I love your collections. They’re very neat and tidy too. By the little glimpse of bookshelf I feel I may be very envious of your stylish home! Thanks for finding the time. Even an hour is precious! Xx

  3. I’ve always been frightened of entering Random Recipes as I don’t like to cheat, but what if I ended up with a recipe I couldn’t cook or worse, eat!  But I’m entering this month too!
You look like you have lots of interesting books and I love your vintage buys, 4 books for £5.00!  I have the Rose Prince and it cost more then your four combined, well done.

    • I admit, I have only entered Random recipes once myself…very poor! Thanks for the tin offer, may just take you up on that in November!

  4. BRILLIANT! You also have a kitchen bookcase like me Laura! Nice to have a sneak preview of your books too! Karen xx

  5. I agree that Dom has set the perfect challenge this month. I definitely had a lot more free time pre-blog!! Love your collection of books especially the new ones – what a bargain! I shouldn’t be allowed in a charity shop either! Every kitchen I’ve seen so far has a copy of short and sweet :)

  6. You are a true addict! I have taken to giving away many of the cookbooks, I’ve bought and not used, to charity shops, so it is lovely to think that other cooks might be snapping them up for their retro appeal! I do have many old books, some belonging to my grandmother and others to my husband’s grandmother as well as cuttings and recipes from my MIL. My mum is hanging on to hers for the moment!
Lovely to visit your kitchen :)

  7. Good to have all your cookbooks in one room. I know we have at least two books in common from the posts I’ve just visited and I’ve spotted at least one other on your shelves. You’ve sort of tempted me with your charity shop purchases, but I really, really shouldn’t buy any more books!!!

  8. wow you have quite the collection here Laura! I have some bookshelf envy going on with all these lovely interiors shots of all my food blogging friends!

  9. The more I see of everyones cook book collections the more I regret not taking part.  Like you the time just seems to run away.  How did I not do this though?  All I had to do was photograph.  You’re lucky to have so many shelves, I’ve started stacking on top of the cabinets!  GG
